The Power of Words

“Words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. We can choose to use this force constructively with words of encouragement, or destructively using words of despair. Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble.”
– Yehuda Berg

Though I’ve heard it said many times in the past, the truth is, it is only now that I am beginning to see just how powerful words are. Since starting Love & Toast Paperie, I’ve had to fight thoughts of self doubt and fear of the unknown. It was and is so easy to get lost in these crippling thoughts, but words of encouragement and support from friends and family help push me forward.

In the very early days of Love & Toast Paperie, I remember asking my friend Christy, who is also a fellow entrepreneur, if she ever thinks and worries about failing in her photography venture. I was scared and worried about quitting my full-time job to start Love & Toast Paperie. She responded with this video, The Gap by Ira Glass. For those struggling with self doubt, I encourage you to listen to and watch this video. It was truly encouraging and inspirational for me.

As I started off the new year, the topic of how impactful positive words can be really resonated with me. I heard and read many different messages on or relating to this topic. I’ve listed a couple that are worth listening to. These have inspired a new series of posters — Power of Words — showcasing powerful quotes, Bible verses, and words to help bring encouragement and positivity to your life.

1) Invisibilia Podcast: The Secret History of Thoughts

In “The Secret History of Thoughts,” co-hosts Alix Spiegel and Lulu Miller ask the question, “Are my thoughts related to my inner wishes, do they reveal who I really am?” The answer can have profound consequences for your life. Hear the story of a man gripped by violent thoughts, and explore how various psychologists make sense of his experience. Also, meet a man trapped inside his head for 13 years with thoughts as his only companion.

2) South Bay Church: Words Bring Life

Our words have power to create, shape, mold, and restore – especially when aligned with the words of God.

You might have been destroyed by words. The weapon was used against you in a negative way and now you see yourself as worthless, insignificant, or an accident. There’s real hurt and pain in you. You are a product of many evil words spoken into you. But that can change.

Try today to make one life-giving statement you speak over yourself. Read through the Psalms and speak those truths into your life. They will become your food for the day and nourish your life.
